Dr. Derek Rodrigues passed his University of Oxford examination boards before entering St Mary’s Hospital Medical School. He received his M.D. degree from the University of London. He did post graduate work in the UK before completing his internal medicine residency at Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions in Baltimore. He completed his Cardiology Fellowship at UCLA. He received a Clinical Investigator Award from the American Heart Association and presented his research at national meetings. He joined Eastside Cardiology Associates in 1990. He has served as Director of Cardiology Services at Evergreen Hospital. He received subspecialist training in the management of cardiac arrhythmias and is Board Certified in Cardiology and Cardiac Electrophysiology. He is a member of the Heart Rhythm Society. He started the Electrophysiology program at Overlake Hospital in 1997, which included the ability to diagnose and curatively treat complex cardiac arrhythmia. In 2001, this also included the catheter ablation of Atrial Fibrillation and he has completed over 1,000 atrial fibrillation ablation procedures. He has performed over 4,000 ablation procedures for all types of arrhythmias. He has been involved in research into managment of arrhythmias and heart failure with implantable defibrillators and pacemakers. He lead the effort by which Overlake Hospital was recognized by the American College of Cardiology as an arrhythmia center of excellence. It was the first on the west coast to receive this important benchmark of clinical excellence.
He is married to a physician and he and his wife have two sons: a freshman at Yale University and a junior at Lakeside High School. He and his wife are involved in a number of organizations and have had a particular passion for Agros International, which is a Seattle-based organization which helps poor rural communities in Central America. However, they also enjoy everything this beautiful part of the world has to offer, especially hiking, backpacking and skiing every chance they get! Dr. Rodrigues and his wife also serve on a medical team that travels to Haiti. More recently they participated in a medical mission with Medical Teams International.
I believe strongly in patient education as a mean of empowering individuals to make important healthcare decisions that work for them. My passion is ensuring excellent patient experiences and outcomes through focused quality improvement.
